"What Manner of Persons Ought Ye to Be"
II Peter 3:11

  1. Introduction II Peter 3:1-18
  2. We ought to be mindful of words spoken by prophets & commandments Apostles (verse 1 & 2)
    II Pet. 3.1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
    II Pet. 3.2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
  3. We ought to know scoffers will come
    1. Verses 3 & 4
      II Pet. 3:3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
      II Pet. 3:4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
    2. Rom. 16:17-18
      Rom. 16.17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
      Rom. 16.18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
    3. I Tim. 4:1-3
      1Tim. 4.1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
      1Tim. 4.2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
      1Tim. 4.3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
    4. II John
  4. We ought to know people are ignorant of the Word of God (verses 5 & 6)
    II Pet. 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
    II Pet. 3:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
  5. We ought to be conscious of the power of God (verse 7)
    II Pet. 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
  6. We ought to know time is meaningless to God (verse 8)
    II Pet. 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
  7. We ought to know God is longsuffering (verse 9 & 15-16)
    II Pet. 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

    II Pet. 3:15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
    II Pet. 3:16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
  8. We ought to know the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night (verses 10-12)
    II Pet. 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
    II Pet. 3:11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
    II Pet. 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
  9. We ought to know there will be a new heaven & earth (verse 13)
    II Pet. 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
  10. We ought to know we need to be found blameless (verse 14)
    II Pet. 3:14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
  11. We ought to know to beware lest we be led away with the error of the wicked (verse 17)
    II Pet. 3:17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
  12. We ought to know that we need to grow spiritually (verse 18)
    II Pet. 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever.
  13. Conclusion Eccl. 12:13-14
    Eccl. 12.13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
    Eccl. 12.14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
