Why should we teach? I Cor. 14:3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
I Cor. 14:12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
What should we use for a source? II Tim. 3:14-4:5 II Tim. 3:14. But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; II Tim. 3:15. And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. II Tim. 3:16. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: II Tim. 3:17. That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. II Tim. 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; II Tim. 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. II Tim. 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; II Tim. 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. II Tim. 4:5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
How should we teach?
Edification - train, tutor, teach
Rom. 14:19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
Eph. 4:11-16 Eph. 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; Eph. 4:12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Eph. 4:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: Eph. 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; Eph. 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: Eph. 4:16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
I Tim. 1:1-7 I Tim. 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope; I Tim. 1:2 Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. I Tim. 1:3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, I Tim. 1:4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. I Tim. 1:5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: I Tim. 1:6 From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; I Tim. 1:7 Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.
Exhortation - prompt, encourage, warn
Acts 14:21-22 Acts 14:21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch, Acts 14:22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.
Heb. 3:12-15 Heb. 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. Heb. 3:13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. Heb. 3:14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; Heb. 3:15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
Comfort - ease, help, aid
Rom. 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
II Cor. 1:1-7 II Cor. 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia: II Cor. 1:2 Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. II Cor. 1:3 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; II Cor. 1:4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. II Cor. 1:5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. II Cor. 1:6 And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. II Cor. 1:7 And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.
Phi. 2:1-8 Phil. 2:1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Phil. 2:2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Phil. 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Phil. 2:4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Phil. 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Phil. 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: Phil. 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: Phil. 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Mat. 23:23-24 MAT 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. MAT 23:24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
Conclusion I Cor. 14:18-19 I Cor. 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: I Cor. 14:19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
